Introduction to Intensive Interaction- Communicating with people who experience severe-profound intellectual disabilities - two day PD

Intensive Interaction is a play based approach to supporting the emergence of the skills and concepts that underpin the development of communication used at Bayside Special Developmental School, and many other settings around the world.

Using this approach, practitioners use behaviours which the learner recognise as their own to intrigue the learner into interactive exchanges and dialogues. Through this interactive play, the students’ exploration and rehearsal of the complex communication skills that enable us to engage with another person, are carefully supported.

The two evening sessions hosted by Dr Mark Barber will equip you with the knowledge and skills required to use Intensive Interaction when working face-to-face with students.

Mark Barber

Mark Barber has been involved in the education of learners with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities [PIMD] for over 25 years, both as a teacher and a consultant in Melbourne and the UK. His professional interest has always focused on supporting people with this level of disability to learn about communicating and building relationships with others. Since arriving in Melbourne, he has continued to work in the classroom, both directly with students with very complex needs, but also working alongside their teaching teams and allied health professionals. His role at Bayside Special Developmental School involves supporting staff to develop their skills as interactive partners and to support learning through cognitively appropriate and socially inclusive learning experiences. Since introducing the approach known as Intensive Interaction to Australia in 2003 at the AGOSCI conference in Sydney, Mark has worked with staff from over 100 schools and agencies from all of Australia’s states.
