Get Started

Dreaming of teaching overseas? Here’s everything you need to know about working and living as a teacher in New Zealand

For many educators, teaching abroad isn’t just a career move – it’s the adventure of a lifetime. And if you’re considering WHERE to take that leap, New Zealand might just be the perfect place.

With its world-renowned education system, breathtaking natural beauty, and welcoming communities, Aotearoa (New Zealand) is fast becoming a top destination for teachers from North America and beyond.

In a recent webinar hosted by ANZUK Education, educators from across the globe joined the team to learn how to make the move. Here’s what you need to know if you’re considering teaching in New Zealand in 2026.

Why Teach in New Zealand?

New Zealand offers something truly special: a balanced lifestyle, supportive teaching environments, and a deep respect for nature and community. Teachers can expect:

  • A globally respected education system that values creativity and critical thinking
  • Autonomy in the classroom
  • A strong focus on student wellbeing
  • Beautiful, diverse settings from bustling cities to peaceful rural towns
  • A work-life balance that actually works

Types of Teaching Opportunities

ANZUK Education works with schools across the country to place teachers in:

  • Early childhood education (ages 0–5)
  • Primary schools (ages 5–13)
  • Secondary schools (ages 13–18)
  • Special education settings (in both mainstream and specialised schools)

Roles include day-to-day relief work (similar to supply or substitute teaching), fixed-term contracts (ideal for working holiday visa holders), and permanent placements for those ready to settle in.

Visa Pathways for Teachers

There are several visa pathways depending on whether you are visiting, working or permanently migrating to New Zealand:

  1. Accredited Employer Work Visa – Secure a job with an accredited employer to apply for this visa.
  2. Straight to Residence Visa – Primary & Secondary teachers can apply for this visa, immediately on securing a job offer from an accredited employer.
  3. Work to Residence Visa – With a job offer from an accredited employer, eligible teachers can transition to permanent status once you have worked in NZ for 24 months.
  4. Working Holiday Visa – Ideal for short-term placements and exploring.

Note: Always check the latest details on the Immigration New Zealand website or with an authorised advisor.

Registration & Requirements

To teach in NZ, you must:

  1. Get your qualifications assessed (IQA)
  2. Apply for Teacher Registration
  3. Secure a teaching role
  4. Complete a salary assessment

The process can seem complex, but ANZUK supports you every step of the way, from documentation to interviews.

What About Salary & Benefits?

All teachers in NZ are paid using a national salary scale based on your qualifications and years of experience. Your consultant can estimate your salary so you can plan accordingly.

Teachers working in state schools on full-year contracts may be eligible for up to NZ$10,000 in relocation support through government grants.

Top Locations to Consider
  • Auckland – NZ’s largest city with the most teaching opportunities
  • Wellington – The capital city with a mix of urban and coastal lifestyle
  • Christchurch – Stunning South Island city with strong community vibes

Each region offers something unique, whether you’re after city life, adventure, or serenity.

Support From Start to Finish

ANZUK doesn’t just match you with jobs – they become your support system. Their services include:

  • CV and interview preparation
  • Guidance through teacher registration and visa steps
  • Post-placement support (where to live, relocation advice), connecting you with other teachers.
  • Social events to help you build community

And the best part? Their service is completely free for teachers.

When Should You Apply?

Now is the time to start your process for 2026. Term 4 (October–December) is the busiest recruitment period, so reaching out early maximises your chances of finding your ideal role.

If you’re looking ahead to 2027, it’s never too early to connect and start preparing.
