Moving to a new country and going through the immigration process can be a daunting prospect, especially when you are required to have your qualifications and diplomas assessed. This will be the case if you are looking for a teaching position in New Zealand.

Overseas teachers intending to teach in New Zealand need to have all of their overseas tertiary qualifications assessed by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), and not just their initial teacher education (ITE) qualification.  This assessment is required for:

  1. Your teacher registration application with the Education Council.
  2. Your salary assessment once you secure a role and start teaching

Steps to getting your qualifications assessed

You will need to email clear, legible, certified colour copies, of the following documents:

  • Certified ID – bio-data page of passport
  • Evidence of name change if required
  • Certified copy of Award / Degree Certificate
  • Certified copy of full Transcript
  • Translations of all documents if originals not in English
  • Teacher Practicum document covering ITE Please note that if you completed 2 teaching practicums you need to complete the form twice.
  • Documentation for underpinning qualifications where ITE resides in PGCert, PGDip, Master’s
