Where to Live in the UK

When you are new to the UK, finding a place to live can seem like a daunting task. We’ve put together our area guides to help you find a great place to live. All of our advice here is first hand – from other international educators and anzuk staff that have made the move, just like you.

Living in Bristol & South West England
Bristol is a creative, diverse and passionate city with centuries old heritage. It is small enough to be friendly but feels big because of all the culture, events and amazing food scene.

If you want to get away for the weekend Bristol has great transport links to London (within 1.5 hours) and the rest of the UK, there is also an airport if you fancy jetting off to somewhere exotic.

Bath is also just next door (15 minutes by train) again boasting beautiful landmarks, tonnes of history and luxury spa’s, It’s safe to say you will always have something to see and do in this part of the UK!

Live in South West England (Blog Version)

Living in London

To make your house-hunting expedition a lot easier we have created a detailed guide of some of our favourite areas in to live in London – divided up into the North West, North East, South West and South East London.

Living in North-west London:North West London is an interesting slice of the city, due in most part to the fact that the NW postcodes cover a very wide – and widely diverse – section of the city. It really has something to offer for everyone, from the famous Hyde & Regents Park to the bars & clubs of Soho and Covent Garden, not to mention the huge sporting stadium of Twickenham and Wembley. West London has always been a mainstay for Aussies & Kiwis making the move to London, super easy to find cheap rent and there are a million things to do during the week and over the weekend.

Living in North-east London:North East London is becoming increasingly popular with the Aussie/Kiwi crowd with the majority of the anzuk office now calling it home.Popular areas in the East are Shoreditch, Dalston, Bethnal Green and Hackney. East London has an edgy vibe, yet it has some fantastic parks, cafes and the picturesque Regent’s Canal running through it. Home to the very popular Columbia Road Flower Market, Brick Lane and Broadway Markets – you are never short of an amazing weekend activity. Hackney Wick Spaces is a great Facebook group to look for places in this area!

Living in South-west London:Most make the move to the South West because it provides the benefit of being well connected to the city centre, while also providing the leafy suburban feel that can be missed once leaving home. Surrounded by parks, and roads lined with trees, the spring and autumn months provide a picturesque landscape for exploring. On observation you will find more residential houses and fewer apartment blocks, removing the built-up feel that can sometimes come with London living.

Living in in South-east London:South East London has seen a huge surge in popularity over the past couple of years, with CHEAP RENT (did we mention cheap rent?) and vastly improved transport options driving swathes of people to the area. The South East really has something for everyone, from the trendy bars & cafes of the up and coming Peckham, to the green open spaces of Greenwich and the thriving live music scene in Brixton. South East London Housing Co– is a good Facebook group to look for accommodation options in this area!

Living in Surrey
If you’re not into the idea of London life but would still like to be within a close drive or train ride to London and the major airports, consider the rolling hills of Surrey.
Lush and green with more of a country feel. Sunday roast by the toasty fire, in a cosy old quintessentially British pub anyone? (Yes please!) We work with some fabulous schools in some lovely little towns in Surrey.

Renting in Surrey can be a lot cheaper than in central London. The bigger towns like Epsom, Guildford & Woking have good transport options with buses & great, fast train links into Clapham Junction Station, a big hub in the South West of London. If you are looking at some of the smaller towns within the area, you may need to consider whether you would need a car to get around.

Living in Wales
anzuk is so proud to offer educators the opportunity to work with schools, in Wales. A country so proud, unique, and welcoming.

There’s a number of lifestyle options when it comes to Wales. If you’re thinking you would still like to live in a city, away from the hustle & bustle of London, or if you would like something a bit more scenic, Cardiff & Newport, in the South of Wales are great options, with good transport links and direct lines to the rest of the UK.

Wales has some of the most beautiful scenery, from almost every city you can find yourself in the country side within about 30 minutes.
