In early May I had the chance to head over to the UK on a two-week work trip for the anzuk ‘Class of April’ Educator event. As a part of the trip, I was afforded the opportunity to see the different regions that anzuk education UK helps support, which included two days in South-West England with the team in Bristol. Now whilst I had been to Bristol a fair few times growing up in England, this was my first time back to the area for at least a decade, so I was keen to see what it had to offer. It’s fair to say, I absolutely loved it!

As I was there for work, my time to see this beautiful City was condensed into two afternoons/evenings, but we made it work. With the weather assisting me on my sightseeing escapades, we made our way from the offices near Almondsbury towards Bristol’s epicentre on one of the evenings via the world-famous Clifton Suspension Bridge. Walking or cycling over the bridge is completely free and it only costs 50p to cross it by car!! Spanning the Avon Gorge from Clifton to Leigh Woods, it truly is an incredible sight up close. A smattering of quintessential English pubs and restaurants surround the area, allowing punters to take in the sights. Any Overseas Educators keen to make the move to this area are in for a treat with the stunning visuals of county Bristol.

A short 10-minute drive from Clifton Suspension Bridge takes you into the heart of Bristol City where you can take a picnic into the magnificent Queen Square with its stunning Georgian architecture, before strolling round the corner to grab a drink at The Llandoger Trow pub, which has stood near the old city centre docks since 1664!

From my time working with the team in the Bristol office, it is clear to see that if you are an Aussie and Kiwi Educator, you will certainly not be short of teaching opportunities. Anzuk Education have recently partnered with the Cabot Learning Federation, Multi-Academy Trust, with a family of 22 different academies across Bristol and the surrounding areas of Southwest of England (with more to join the Trust in September 2023). The Trust supports more than 12,500 children and young people aged 3 to 19 in a diverse array of settings and are incredibly supportive of overseas educators with a passion for transforming students’ learning.

I was also lucky enough to speak with Rebecca, an Aussie Secondary English Teacher who has been living and teaching in Bristol since heading over from Melbourne at start of the year. She is currently working at the City Academy (also part of the Cabot Learning Federation) through anzuk and afforded me some time to chat through her move, which you can see below:

I could go on and on for my many reasons why I think teaching and living in Bristol and the Southwest of England will be the right move for you, but hey, why not go and find out for yourself?? I can guarantee you won’t regret it?.
