Online Resources: English (Primary)

Your students will be reading and writing like pros with these engaging primary English resources!

Scholastic (All ages): This link offers primary aged children the chance to engage in daily activities themed around set topics. As part of each topic, students will often be asked to listen to a story or read an article. Then, they are guided through a range of activities they must complete at home. There is 3weeks worth of activities, conveniently set-up on a day-to-day basis. This could be used as a resource or a guide rather than a strict plan that teachers must adhere to.

Squiz Kids (Grade 3-6): A great resource for students to remain connected with the real world and engage in experiences themed around the podcast. One example might be, today’s podcast talks about the link between bears in hibernation and the world being in isolation. Students may want to create their own isolation journal, take 5-10mins a day to write and draw about their day. Some questions they may want to explore could be “What am I grateful for?”, “What did I learn from ____ situation/interaction/experience?”, “What idea(s) did I have today?”, “How am I feeling?”.

Audible (All ages): Audible now lets anyone, anywhere access over 200 full-length audiobooks for free for the duration of school closures. There’s no log-in or registration required and it’s not a free trial. All the titles in the collection are available to stream straight from the web and there’s no limit to how much people can listen.

Story Line Online: Children’s books read by famous- people.
Spelling City: Free self-created spelling quizzes. Input spelling lists for your students to use for free spelling help. Students can learn spelling words, practise spelling tests, and play fun spelling games.

Letter Planet: Help a stranded space traveller return home by filling three fuel tanks with words that have the same letter pattern. Select words with combinations of ‘sh’, ‘ch’ or ‘th’. Read and listen to model words. Select similar words with the same pattern and place them in the fuel tank. Then construct sentences by putting words in the appropriate order. Identify the word with the chosen letter combinations.

Story Time From Space: Listen to astronauts read stories from space.

Shakespeare With Sir Patrick Stewart: Indulge in some literary genius with a daily Shakespeare sonnet – and better still, have it read aloud by none other than the legendary Sir Patrick Stewart! You can watch (or catch up on previous sonnets) on Sir Patrick’s instagram.

Mr T’s Phonics: Chosen as the #1 website to make your child smarter by The Times, Mr T’s has over 600 videos teaching how to read using phonics, grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Pobble365: Each day, Pobble365 posts a weird, wonderful or thought-provoking image to inspire creative writing. Use the image on its own to get started, or scroll down and use the writing prompts, comprehension questions and activities provided to spur conversation and imagination.

Classroom Cereal: A series of free, printable short stories that double as grammar exercises. The original short stories are published monthly and in five parts. Each part of the story contains five grammatical errors, such as punctuation, spelling, capitalisation, etc. Enjoy the story and find the errors. It’s that simple!

Scootle: Resources are currently aligned with the Australian Curriculum: Search lessons by year level, strand, general capability or cross curriculum priority.

ABC Education: These resources include educational videos, teaching guides and games are mapped to the Australian Curriculum and are appropriate for both primary and secondary students.
