Coding for kids can be overwhelming at first. After all it is, quite literally, like learning a new language!

Learning to code can increase a students’ odds of securing their dream STEM career, especially in a world where computing jobs are growing at a rapid pace.

While programming is logic-based, it’s also an extremely creative activity. If you know how to code, you can develop apps, video games, websites, and more!

So let’s drive into our favourite coding and I.T resources…
Hour of Code: A global computer science initiative that creates a fun and creative environment for students to be introduced to the concepts of computer programming. One-hour tutorials in over 45 languages. No experience needed.
Code Academy: An online interactive platform that offers free coding classes in 12 different programming languages including Python, Java, JavaScript, Ruby, SQL, C++, Swift, and Sass, as well as markup languagesHTML and CSS. The site also offers a paid “Pro” option that gives users access to personalized learning plans, quizzes, and realistic projects.

Scratch: Your students can use Scratch to code their own interactive stories, animations, and games. In the process, they learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively .

Kodable: Coding for 4-10 year olds.

iDEA: The Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award, known as iDEA, is an international programme that helps you develop digital, enterprise and employability skills for free. Through a series of online challenges, you can win career-enhancing badges, unlock new opportunities and, ultimately, gain industry-recognised Awards that help you stand out from the crowd. Badges can be achieved in coding, social media, e-safety, virtual reality, blockchain, research and more. Each badge is an interactive online module – the more badges you get, the more points you get towards a bronze, silver or gold award.
codeSpark Academy:Teach little learners the basics of computer science. Once your mini coders master the puzzles, they can create games of their own. With new puzzles and games added every month, kids as young as four can develop 21st century skills that will help boost their performance in all subjects. During school closures, use code SCHOOLCLOSED to get three months’ free membership.
Blocksmith: Students can learn about 3D modelling, animations and programming, before starting with advanced programs like Unity3D and Unreal. Blocksmith does not require special equipment, and can run on regular home computers (Windows PC, Mac and Chromebook). Get one month free to create 3D games and experiences.
