Why did you decide to teach in the UK?

I decided it was time to broaden my horizons and take a leap into the unknown. Teaching is challenging; it’s no secret! My thinking was ‘if not now, when?!’

A teaching post became readily available in London so I made a somewhat impulsive decision to relocate there! I also know how impressive international teaching experience looks back home to Australian schools.

A huge pull factor was that positions become available swiftly over here. Teaching in a contrasting educational backdrop adds another string to your bow.

What made you choose anzuk Education as your preferred agency?

I had a brief affiliation with anzuk’s Melbourne Office before I left, so it felt prudent to continue with them to make my transition as seamless as possible. The Melbourne team were helpful, accommodating, honest and enthusiastic about this exciting endeavour. The wonderful thing about anzuk is the comradery and sense of community.

At anzuk, I was offered a plethora of social functions, support sessions and professional development to enhance my adjustment period. I immensely thank them for their continued assistance and vivacious approach.

If you want an all-inclusive, warm and approachable group of likeminded people, look no further than anzuk.

How did you find the transition and registration process with anzuk?

Adapting to a new country is a slow, gradual process. anzuk made the registration process straightforward and within 2 days of arriving, I was in my respective placement. This certainly alleviated any additional stress that I felt about organising myself.

What are the biggest differences you have found between teaching in Australia and the UK?

The differences between teaching back home and here are vast! Although challenging, the UK Education system seems to be more regimented and assessment driven.

I find that the ‘teaching and learning’ aspect is somewhat affected by this very traditional system. This then has a knock on effect amongst the teaching staff as they are always thinking of the next assessment.

We all know teachers are time pressed and over here substantiates that theory. Teachers trained over here are generally more wary and vigilant on behaviour.

Teachers and students back home appear to have a more personal, authentic relationship based on trust and mutual respect.

What do you enjoy most about teaching and living in the UK?

The freedom and flexibility, the challenge of adapting to a new education system. The travel aspect heightens the appeal. The comradery amongst the colleagues has been exemplary, coupled with the challenge of teaching outside your preferred methods which allows you to become more adaptable, versatile as a teacher.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of moving to the UK to teach?

My biggest recommendation for young Aussie professionals thinking of making the move is save as much money as you can. Prices of living are significantly higher than back home.

Be prepared to be thrown into the deep end – don’t be afraid of it, embrace it. Finally, be prepared to be independent. I didn’t fully realise just how significant this becomes when you’re half way around the world.

Join a social sporting team, join a gym and start establishing social networks.

If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you. Learn from everyone – follow no one!
