Having been informed by LinkedIn that I hit my 5 year work anniversary with anzuk Education this month, I thought it would be a great time to reflect and review what I’ve learned in my 5 years in the education recruitment industry.

Having arrived in Melbourne from the UK unemployed, I was very fortunate to find myself being interviewed by Daniel Mundy (in a Spiderman outfit) in October 2013. I’d never considered recruitment as a possible career option for me before arriving, but I knew the role involved education, which I, fortunately, did have some knowledge in, so I went in eager to find out more.

I consider myself very lucky in being successful in applying for the role and have had an incredible 5 years since. If there has been one thing I’ve learned, that I believe is more important in this role than anything else, is communicating exceptionally no matter who you are dealing with.

Communication within the team in the office is incredibly important to create and maintain a positive culture. It is imperative to communicate feedback regularly and timely in order to allow for growth but also to acknowledge the incredible work your team do on a daily basis.

Ensuring we communicate well with schools is also fundamental in ensuring we provide the quality service we need to. Presenting outstanding educators that will fit in perfectly with the culture of their school is paramount to building trust and maintaining relationships.

Communicating with our educators is also crucial as we can pass on fantastic feedback as well as encouraging areas of improvement that will lead them to success in the future. Without this feedback, how can we expect educators to thrive and improve? Although most of our communication is over the phone, this does not need to prevent personal relationships building and getting to know educators as well as possible. The more we know about an educator, the more likely we are to find the perfect school for them.

I wish I could say we communicate perfectly all day, every day, but I know this isn’t the case and it is something that I always strive to improve upon individually and as a team. I’m fortunate to be working with some incredible people who are thinking of innovative ways to improve our communication and I’m learning every day new ways to communicate with my team, my clients and my educators.

I’m fortunate to work for a company that values and believes in growth and learning of all their employees and that’s why I’m as excited about this job as I was when I started in 2013.
