Purpose drives an organisation and values ensure you take the right roads to get there. But what does this have to do with you?
Eleven years ago I packed up my life in the UK and decided it was time to head home to Australia after 3.5 years teaching overseas. I’d been teaching for a total of nearly 7 years in both Australia and the UK and really enjoyed it but I couldn’t see myself lasting for another 10.
I love people, I love having fun and I love hard work. One week before I was booked to head back home to Australia, recruitment found me. I didn’t for a moment consider I would ever be part of a global education recruitment business but I found purpose. I was given an opportunity to work with people. We made it fun and we have worked damned hard at it ever since. Harder today than ever before.
“the immense feeling of pride”
So how do we stay motivated at anzuk 11 years on? We have a purpose with a responsibility. We have something in common with every single teacher and support staff that we work with. We have purpose. It’s simple but powerful. It’s something you need to be able to draw on consistently, even when times are tough and not going your way. When things are a challenge at home, when you lose direction or when you think you have had enough of the grind, think of purpose. The immense feeling of pride you get when you help other people, your colleagues and your students.
I’m privileged to come to a place every day that allows me to drive purpose. While we don’t always get to see it first hand in the classrooms as you do, we get the opportunity to influence it (through recruitment) every day. So I leave you with this…..When you contemplate the future and when you think about the job, think about your purpose. You do make a difference.
