Eurovision 2023: Inspiring your Classroom Lesson Plans

For those in the know, this coming weekend marks the 67th Eurovision song contest! A particularly special occasion for me personally as growing up in the UK, this yearly event was enjoyed sitting around the TV with friends and family, while wearing whacky costumes and marking score cards. The United Kingdom will be holding this year’s competition in Liverpool after being runner up to the Ukraine last year. It’s still a very proud moment for us Brits who last won back in 1997 with Katrina and the Waves.

Eurovision is an international song competition that celebrates music, art, and diversity. Participants from various countries compete for the best song of the year, and the contest has become a platform for showcasing unique and diverse music styles. Eurovision appeals to many people from different backgrounds and cultures because of the diversity of musical genres represented in the contest. It is also well known for launching the careers of famous artists we know and love today, such as ABBA, Celine Dion, and

Eurovision is not just about music, but it also promotes diversity and inclusivity, raising awareness of social issues such as human rights, equality, and diversity.

Read on to explore some fun Eurovision themed activities you can implement in the classroom to promote and celebrate all the positive messages behind this event!

1. Free Resources via Twinkl
Twinkl is an awesome website with hundreds of downloadable activities for the classroom! Some of the Eurovision themed resources you can find here include:

2. Eurovision-themed Live Lesson by BBC UK
Inspired by the unique partnership between the UK, Ukraine and host city Liverpool, this 30 minute curriculum-linked programme will celebrate inclusivity and explore the power of music to bring communities together through fun interactive activities. • This Live Lesson will broadcast on the CBBC Channel at 11:00 on Friday, 12 May 2023
• An earlier version of this plan will be available from Wednesday 10 May to help with planning
• Musician and composer YolanDa Brown will be there to help children create their own Eurovision song

• This is another great blog by a fellow teacher that outlines some Eurovision themed activities that can be used in the classroom
• It is a 6 day lesson which you explore here, but activities can be broken up to mini lessons for smaller projects
