Top tips: How to secure a teaching position in a UK school from overseas

Have you been dreaming of moving to the UK for the past few years and wondering how you could turn that into a reality?

Securing a contract position in the UK school before you fly, can be an excellent way to start your adventure of living overseas.

From having the peace of mind with job security confirmed upon arrival, to knowing you’ll be a part of a school community, where you can build strong relationships with the staff and students, there are numerous benefits to be found.

When looking at different opportunities abroad, it’s important to be present with at least 4 key points, which we’ll work through together in detail below.

  • Knowing the best time when to arrive ✈

There are generally three main recruitment windows for UK schools, which coincide with the UK academic calendar and school terms. See below for three common examples of travel plans for Brit bound educators, arriving in the UK to start a contract position.

September, Autumn Term:

Perfect chance to travel Europe across the Summer and then arrive to start in the new academic year.

January, Spring Term:

Finish your local position in December, fly over to have a European Christmas or New Year and then start in the new calendar year.

April, Summer Term:

Arrive before or after the Easter holidays, teach in the classroom for one term and enjoy the European summertime, and then continuing or looking for a new role in September.

If your arrival dates don’t align perfectly with the above, our team will be able to discuss what alternative options could suit you best.

  • Establish your preferences, but remain open to hearing what else is out there

What is your ideal role? Have a think about what type of work you will enjoy most. We want to understand and assist in finding a position that aligns with your experience and preferences. We’ll closely work with you to provide advice and to also understand your:

Location preferences:

Choices of living across London, Bristol, Surrey, Wales, or other regional locations throughout England and your preferred commuting distances

Preferred type of setting:

OFSTED Rating, Government or independent, High or lower student attainment levels, Mainstream, SEN or PRU

Ideal Key Stages:

Early Years Foundation Stage, Key stage 1 and 2, Key stage 3 and 4, Key Stage 5

Subject preferences:

Primary/Secondary Subject Specialisms or your experience in different subject areas

Personal preferences:

Staff cohort, school leadership, student behaviour, school community, school vision, professional development opportunities, teaching and learning resources, or school facilities.

We always recommend considering roles that might not be a perfect fit for all your preferences, as different schools may have a variety of benefits from working there.

  • Having an updated CV, Personal Statement & Photo

Your CV, Personal Statement & Photo will help complete your profile for us to share with our partner schools across the UK, as we also partner with you to find the right role:

CV:

Written with a clear purpose, relevant content, succinct structure and highly engaging.

Personal Statement:

Personal, engaging and importantly authentic to you.

Profile Headshot:

Dress professionally, in an evenly framed and well-lit photo of yourself

  • Interviewing with a UK school

At this point, our UK based team will aim to have presented roles for you to consider. From then, upon the schools and your request, we’ll organise a Skype interview with one or multiple UK schools. Some useful tips to follow:

Pre-interview:

Research the school, know your CV and be prepared.

During the interview:

Be present and engaged, structure your answers (STAR), be clear and specific and ask your final questions.

Post-interview:

Say thank you to the interview panel, reflect and take some time, and debrief with anzuk.

We will provide you with support throughout the entire interview process and have comprehensive resources available, such as our interview preparation handbook. ?
