Applications are warmly invited for the position of Head of Science at Somerville House. This is an exciting opportunity for a Head of Science to make a significant impact on teaching, learning, and strategy within the Somerville House community, specifically within the Science department.
  
The School
Somerville House is a day and boarding school for girls established in 1899, providing exceptional education for students from Prep through to Year 12, with a co-educational offering in Pre-Prep. Somerville House students have the opportunity to participate in an extensive academic, sporting and cultural program, while receiving high standards in personal care and individual attention within the school community. Somerville House is a school of the Presbyterian and Methodist Schools Association (PMSA). The PMSA is a mission of the Presbyterian and Uniting Churches.
  
The Role
The Head of Department for Science is responsible for the development of curriculum from Years 7-12 in Science. This position reports jointly through to the Dean of Academic Programs and the Dean of Academic Care (7-9) and the Principal thereafter. The Head of Department for Science will also liaise with the Head of Junior School with regard to the implementation of the P-6 years Science Curriculum.
  
The position of Head of Department – Science is an important middle management position with a range of responsibilities in the areas of:

  • Leadership and Staff Management
  • Curriculum Management
  • Resource Management

  • Proven interpersonal qualities and skills necessary for close cooperation with members of staff, parents, students and other members of the school community.
  • Demonstrated exemplary professionalism.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and energetically within a dynamic organisation.
  • Demonstrated excellence in the area of current and emerging educational developments in your subject area/s to enhance teaching and learning environments.
  • Proven ability to encourage and promote an appreciation of the subject area in the School community.
  • Demonstrated excellence in classroom teaching especially with regard to teaching and learning strategies.
  • Proven capacity to mentor and offer professional support to teachers.
  • Be committed to one’s own continued self-improvement through professional learning and participation in professional association activities.
  • Possess self-motivation, creative endeavour, initiative and a willingness to accept responsibility.
  • Demonstrated experience in dealing appropriately with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Possess high level communication skills (both interpersonal and written).
  • Excellent technological literacy skills.

Commencing Term2 2024, (or as negotiated), is a full-time, ongoing position.
